GETTING ACCLIMATED – Your 1st Month on the Job...Getting Ready to Practice Medicine

The practice of medicine is a business; it is your chosen profession whatever the specialty or level of degree. Each department or specialty has their own set of rules and policies with regard to your clinical responsibilities. For guidelines and instruction on policy regarding your medical practice or clinical responsibilities you should consult your chair.

This portion of the Orientation is an overview of the basic organizations on campus.

Kansas University Physicians, Inc. (KUPI), was incorporated as a not for profit corporation in 1996. The corporation was organized to assist the University Of Kansas School Of Medicine and its clinical faculty achieve their teaching, research, and patient care missions. The KUPI organization is comprised of 280 physicians and was originally designed to create a practice model that would put a single face on the physician practice at Kansas University Medical Center. Primary goals of KUPI included the provision of shared administrative services that support the clinical practice including billing, accounting, planning, managed care, and other business functions, and developing necessary group-wide clinical practice policies, services, and systems.

It has been the vision of the organization to ensure the clinical practice provides an adequate and diverse patient base for both education and clinical research, and delivers patient care services that are competitive, comprehensive, and coordinated. KUPI maintains a formal relationship to the University and School of Medicine (SOM) through an Affiliation Agreement, and then to each clinical foundation/department through a professional services agreement (PSA). The contractual relationship of the University to the Foundations is through KUPI via KUPI’s PSA with each foundation. The KUPI Board of Directors is comprised of 10 voting members. The voting members include the President, 3 Clinical Chairs who are elected by the Clinical Chairs Council, and 6 at large faculty who serve staggered 3 year terms. Of the six at large directors, two are elected from the medically oriented departments, two from the surgically oriented departments, and two from the hospital based departments. The officers on the KUPI board of directors are: Kirk Benson, MD, president; William Gabrielli, MD, vice president; Doug Girod, MD, treasurer; and Lowell Tilzer, MD, secretary. Shelley Gebar is the chief operations officer of KUPI, and James Albertson is the chief financial officer.

The University of Kansas Hospital is a constantly growing facility with 508 staffed beds, serving nearly 21,000 inpatients annually.  The Hospital is committed to serving as a health care resource for people, physicians and hospitals throughout the region now and into the future.  While a 2007 U.S. News & World Report article specifically ranks our heart care and heart surgery program as 30th in the nation among 5,462 hospitals, the ranking reflects the overall exceptional efforts put forth by our entire staff. Our mortality, quality measures and record-setting patient satisfaction scores across the board place us among the nation’s best.

In 2006, we opened the $77 million Center for Advanced Heart Care. This year, there are several major construction and renovation initiatives designed to improve patient care and expand resources. One of the most exciting is the 55,000 square foot outpatient Cancer Center and Medical Pavilion on our Westwood Campus.

We will continue to achieve success at the University of Kansas Hospital by following a simple formula: put the needs of our patients first. Join us in that focus, as we continue to create an environment that fosters teamwork and partnerships between our Hospital and Medical Staffs to provide the safest and highest-quality patient care.
