Faculty Council


The core of faculty governance is the Faculty Council and its five standing committees. The Faculty Council is a representative group empowered to conduct the most of the business of the faculty.

Membership

Delegates elected by each department. The number of full-time faculty members determines the number of delegates from each department.

- Departments of up to 20 full-time faculty members elect one delegate,
- Departments with 21-40 full-time faculty members elect two delegates,
- Departments with 41-60 full-time faculty members elect three delegates
- Departments with > 60 full-time faculty members elect four delegates

  • Chairs of each of the five standing committees
  • Medical students: two elected from the Kansas City and one from the Wichita campus
  • Four members at large elected from the faculty. Two must be from basic science and two from clinical departments. One must be from the Wichita campus.
  • Three departmental chairs. One must be from a Kansas City basic science department, one from a Kansas City clinical department, and one from the Wichita campus.
  • The Executive Dean and Dean of the Wichita campus.

Duties

The Faculty Council is charged with conducting the business of the medical faculty, including but not limited to:

  • Calling special meetings of the Faculty
  • Considering any matter presented to it by a member of the Council, the Executive Committee, or the Executive Dean
  • Forwarding recommendations to the Faculty and/or Executive Council · Reviewing the reports and actions of the Standing Committees
  • Reviewing, recommending and/or approving changes to major academic programs of the School (includes deciding which changes require approval by the Faculty)
  • Recommending formation or discontinuation of programs
  • Formulating changes to the Bylaws of the School (includes bringing proposed changes to the Faculty for consideration and action)
  • Appointing Ad Hoc committees

Process

The Faculty Council meets quarterly. The Chair is responsible for the agenda.

Additional meetings may be called at the request of the Executive Committee, the Chair of Faculty Council, or the Executive Dean. Meetings may also be called by written petition of ten Council members or 20 faculty members.

A quorum of 50 percent plus one of the voting members is required. Members with more than 50 percent unexcused absences in one year are replaced. Alternates are not permitted if a Council member is unable to attend a meeting.

Minutes of Faculty Council meetings must be made available to faculty members.

Ad Hoc Committees

  • Faculty Liaison Committee
    The Faculty Liaison Committee is an ad hoc committee of the SOM Faculty Council, with members appointed by the faculty council chair. This committee will address select topics, identified by members of the SOM faculty to be of general interest, at SOM faculty council meetings. It will serve as a resource for information flow between the SOM faculty and administration.
