- Remember what you were like then – be empathic.
- Recognize strengths and weaknesses – everyone has some of each.
- Your values and objectives are different from theirs.
- Identify a common cause – you’re all in this together.
- Mentor by example.
- Choose your battles.
- Be tolerant, but firm and consistent.
- Leave emotions and ego at the door.
- You are the GPS – not the driver – recalculate route as necessary.
- Delegate – and don’t micromanage. Let people make mistakes.
- Enable and guide – don’t push or bully.
- Be an enzyme – not a reagent.
- Like parenting, you’ve succeeded when they leave the nest.
