Top 13 List for Mentoring Post Docs & Junior Faculty

  • Remember what you were like then – be empathic.
  • Recognize strengths and weaknesses – everyone has some of each.
  • Your values and objectives are different from theirs.
  • Identify a common cause – you’re all in this together.
  • Mentor by example.
  • Choose your battles.
  • Be tolerant, but firm and consistent.
  • Leave emotions and ego at the door.
  • You are the GPS – not the driver – recalculate route as necessary.
  • Delegate – and don’t micromanage. Let people make mistakes.
  • Enable and guide – don’t push or bully.
  • Be an enzyme – not a reagent.
  • Like parenting, you’ve succeeded when they leave the nest.
