The Office of Professional Development and Faculty Affairs (PDFA) Campus Wide Leadership Series grows in popularity every year serving all employees on the KUMC Campus and co-sponsored by the University of Kansas Hospital, KUMC-Human Capital Management, University of Kansas Physicians, Inc., University of Kansas Schools of Medicine, Nursing and Allied Health plus the Office of Graduate Studies and Continuing Education.
Our goal with the series is to teach people, through the stories of other's experiences, how to be leaders. We normally look for three basic components in a Campus-Wide Leadership Series presentation.
Some sessions have been recorded and are viewable by clicking the red camera or the link to the slides..

GUEST: Mary Sweet, CEO, Kiowa County Memorial Hospital in Greensburg, Kansas
Mary Sweet, experienced what we would hope to never experience: a tornado which destroyed her community while she was in charge of running the only hospital around when the tragedy hit in 2007. Ms. Sweet will share with us her story: experiences with the 2007 tornado while running the hospital, how she coped personally and professionally with the tragedies, suggestions for our campus to "ready ourselves" should we ever face a local natural disaster, and anything about "leading the ship" in the midst of an EF-5 storm with winds of 205 mph.
GUEST: Greg Tamblin
Our guest, Greg Tamblyn, has been an award winning speaker-humorist-singer-songwriter for over 20. He combines outstanding audience rapport with an irreverent sense of humor, and has a special interest in the relationship of music, laughter, and lifestyle to physical and emotional well-being. Greg's humorous musings on cultural absurdities, as well as his messages of effectiveness, optimism, and service, have garnered him a large international following.
Greg was recommended by participants last year on our Campus-Wide Leadership evaluations. He will address motivational issues related to healthcare, teaching our participants how to handle -- with a little humor -- the stress of their very serious jobs during cuts and cutbacks, personal life issues, worry, moments of confusion, being over-achievers or handling difficult patients or heaven forbid, difficult colleagues.

May 4th, 2007, the town of Greensburg Kansas was leveled by a tornado. GUESTS: Captain Chris and Suzie Joiner, Fire Station No. 17, KCFD and Captain Ray Wynn

October 18, 2009, Captain Chris Joiner was badly injured in a vacant building fire at 30th Street and Highland Avenue. (Yes, he was a patient in the KUMC Burn Unit.)
"We had a two-story apartment building. I got trapped trying to come through a wall," Joiner said. "I burned 30 percent of my body. I have second- and third-degree burns." Joiner has not been able to return to work, and he may have two or three months of rehab ahead of him. Joiner said he probably would have died were it not for coworkers, who discovered him missing and went back in the burning building to bring him out. "I sometimes take these guys for granted. I've always thought, 'Oh, nothing's ever going to happen to him. He's got a good crew. He's in great physical shape and knows what he's doing,'" wife Suzie Joiner said. "These guys are heroes here," Chris Joiner said. KC News @ http://www.kmbc.com/news/21993873/detail.html
What follows is the story which will inspire you: how Chris and his wife Suzie faced their tragedy and are doing today. They truly are a remarkable couple. Equally remarkable is Ray Wynn, the firefighter and colleague who played an instrumental part of Chris' rescue.
GUEST: Gail Worth, Owner & CEO, Gail's Harley-Davison
Gail Worth,is a woman with great strength, drive and success. She has competed in the "testosterone-fueled world of chromed-out Sportsters and Softails and is having the last laugh as a single woman who owns and runs one of the largest Harley-Davidson dealerships in the Midwest." She's full of laughter, fun and spirit and was the first woman inducted into the Greater KC Business Hall of Fame right beside Crosby Kemper, Henry Bloch and Lamar Hunt. Gail is someone who gives back to her community by sponsoring numerous charity events each year, and we are honored to have her as a guest.
Join us to learn what makes her so successful and sought after as a national speaker. She's a positive, happy person who doesn't let negativity get into her life. With all her success, just like the rest of us, she's had to travel "plenty of potholes on her path to prosperity." The KC Star article about Gail.
