| The Office of Professional Development and Faculty Affairs (PDFA) Campus Wide Leadership Series served over 560 participants in the spring of 2007, with an average audience range of 150 to 200. According to Robert M. Klein, PhD, Associate Dean for Professional Development and Faculty Affairs, "The leadership series has been one of our most consistently well attended programs. We look forward to a spectacular spring season again this year." All events are held on the 1st Friday of the month with the kick-off presentation in 2008 being the exception, January 8. The series, which is co-sponsored by KU Hospital, KUSON, KUMCHR, KUPI, KUSAH, KU Office of Graduate Studies, KUSOM, and is now sponsored by Continuing Education. GROUP OBJECTIVE: Our guest Mr. Paul Casella was so well
received last year at the SOM Educator's Breakfast Series we are bringing
him back for everyone to hear! This session examines verbal and non-verbal
communication skills effective in building rapport and interacting one-on-one
with patients and colleagues alike. Describes how to alter and emphasize
your communication style for different learners, situations, purposes and
environments. It discusses ways to build effective working relationships
with peers and staff and addresses how to deal with upset individuals or
conflict situations.

Mamie Hughes, Community Leader and Volunteer in Kansas City
OBJECTIVE: Our guest Mrs. Mamie Curie Hughes is a local KC Community Leader who has been honored with numerous awards for accomplishments due to her efforts which have improved life in KC, including being honored recently as of KCB’s 50+1 Influential Women in KC for 2007. Mrs. Hughes, 77, is a former school teacher who served on the Charter Jackson County Legislature and currently serves on numerous Boards of Directors in Kansas City. She holds a bachelor's degree from Fisk University in Tennessee. Her work has spanned the range from community-wide initiatives to individual mentoring relationships. Among her many notable improvement efforts in Kansas City are the 18th and Vine Historic Jazz District, the Bruce Watkins Drive, and the Kansas City region 911 system. Hughes commitment to seeing life as it should be and engaging others to help the vision become reality. Where others might see a problem, Mamie sees the promise of the good to come when she has organized and drawn together like-minded persons. Mamie does not see the world as it is, but as it should be. Masking an iron will in her appealing manner and pleasing appearance, Mamie draws us all toward our better selves.
APRIL 4Jeff Lanza, Special Agent, Kansas City FBI
Special FBI Agent Jeff Lanza has been an FBI Agent since 1988 and a spokesman since 1990. He currenlty is the Kansas City FBI spokesman responsible for responding to media inquiries on a local and national basis. Agent Lanza speaks regularly to Kansas City groups on the topics of Internet safety, identity theft, mortgage fraud, human trafficking, public corruption, money laundering, organized crime and general FBI matters. He has served as head of internal security of the Kansas City FBI and serves on the FBI's National Recruitment Team, which specializes in recruiting agents with high-tech backgrounds. Prior to joining the FBI agent Lanza was employed by Xerox Corporation as a Computer Systems Analyst. Agent Lanza has an undergraduate degree in Criminal Justice from the University of New Haven (Connecticut) and a Masters Degree in Business Administration from the University of Texas.

Tom Bowser, President & CEO of BCBS of Kansas City and a graduate of KU
Mr. Bowser will present his story, explaining the obstacles and limitations he may have had to overcome to achieve his level of success. In addition to his own story, Mr. Bowser will explain how Kansas City medical industry related information and health statistics compare with those from across the nation. Bowser was named president and chief executive officer in July 2001. He was previously executive vice president and chief operating officer. He has more than 31 years of healthcare management experience, including past positions with the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association and plans in Oklahoma and Kansas City. Bowser is chair of the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce, a board member of the Civic Council of Greater Kansas City, BCS Financial Corporation and the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association.
