The Office of Professional Development and Faculty Affairs (PDFA) is pleased to offer 50 programs in the 2007-2008 Academic year.  All sessions are now open for registration.  Faculty members can develop and enhance their skills as teachers, clinicians, researchers, leaders in academic medical education, and writers, as well as skills critical to the success with mentoring experiences and their own career development.  Categories

Workshops
Workshops are over the noon hour (noon – 1:00 p.m.), require pre-registration and will provide lunch. APA PRA Category 1 Credit will be available for many of the sessions with registration for credit on-site.  EEDS registration “swipe cards” are used for easy registration.

On the Professional Development Seminars & Events site you may either register for a single event, or select and register into several at one time.  Without pre-registering a lunch and handout will not be available to you.

newMENTORING INITIATIVE – PRESENTATION & NETWORKING LUNCH SERIES

  • Each noon hour networking session offers an opportunity for mentees (junior faculty with less than 5 years on our campus) or mentors (any member of the SOM, SON, or SAH faculty who serve as a mentor to one or more SOM junior faculty members) to enjoy lunch together, share and learn from each other, and participate in a 20 minute presentation and discussion related to mentoring related topics.  Some sessions will combine both mentees and mentors; others will create sessions for only the mentees or the mentors to attend.

LEADERSHIP SKILLS

  •  Leadership Series - Campus Wide
    This is a series of 5 lecture/lunch presentations on the 1st Friday beginning in January to anyone on the KUMC campus.  The theme this year is "Stories of Leaders: How They Do or Did It" offering speakers and panels of presenters from both across our KUMC campus and from the Kansas City area. For those unable to attend, videos are available at the end of the series with a link next to the information for each session.  
  • pikchurLeadership Series - for Faculty Only
    Three lecture/lunch presentations with guest speakers this fall will be open to members of the faculty in the SOM, SON and SAH. An additional leadership skill building session will be offered by WIMS to the SOM faculty members.

Outside KUMC

  • Supertrax: Leadership in Action
    These are leadership and management classes offered for credit through KUMC Human Resources.
  • Society for Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (SELAM)
    This Program is geared toward senior faculty in academic health centers and related organizations, members of the Society for Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine, and those interested in the advancement of women in academic health.
  • Executive Leadership in American Medicine (ELAM)
    ELAM is one of the premier programs in the country designed to promote the advancement of women in academic medicine. Consisting of three one- week, off- site segments coupled with a project of the candidate’s choice, this course is open to women at the level of Associate Professor and higher on a competitive basis.

  • Faculty Vitae
    A publication of AAMC’s Faculty Development and Leadership programs. Its features include news, resources, and lessons in leadership and management to support U.S. medical schools and teaching hospitals.

WRITING SKILLS FOR ACADEMIC MEDICINE

  • Writing Workshop Series
    1st Wednesday lecture/lunch series which offers both local and outside guest presenters on topics of writing skills such as educational scholarship, improving your own writing skills for use with publishing and teaching, writing letters of recommendation, how to write reviews and more. Fall sessions are basic topics and the spring are more advanced programs.  (Past Events) .

WIMS
Special workshops and conferences will be presented by the organization of Women in Medicine (WIMS) , now under new leadership, and will be announced throughout the year.  Anyone on the faculty in the School of Medicine wishing to join the organization, or needing additional information should contact Ryan Carrillo, WIMS Senior Coordinator.
