Educational Programs' Mentoring Overview

Today, junior faculty wishing to succeed in academic medicine face daunting challenges. Meeting these challenges is greatly enhanced by effective mentoring.  With this in mind mentored research experiences are the cornerstone of the training programs in the Clinical and Translational Research Education Center (CTREC). The mentor development program is headed by Robert Klein, PhD, associate dean for Professional Development and Faculty Affairs at KUMC. Dr. Klein is a member of the CTREC Executive Committee and advises the committee on recruitment, monitoring, and evaluation of mentors.

The CTREC Executive Committee works with our research programs and the HICTR Clinical Research Development Office to foster the development of interdisiciplinary mentorship teams and stimulate the development of new training grants.

CTREC mentors represent a wide spectrum of skills, specialties, and research interests and are selected based on their ability to support the scholar, their track record in mentorship, their history of successful interdisciplinary research, and their ability to commit the time required for mentorship.  To qualify as a CTREC mentor, the mentor must have a source of external funding secure enough to ensure that the prospective CTREC scholar can complete their entire training under their guidance and be assured of resources to complete their own mentor-assisted research project.

Presentations for Mentors & Mentees

All mentors are strongly encouraged to attend a series of mentoring and professional development presentations coordinated out of  the Office of Professional Development and Faculty Affairs (PDFA) and if unable to attend, they are encouraged to review the highlights of the training events available on-line under PDFA Training Past Events.  These training sessions describe important components of the mentor-trainee relationship, including time-management and communication skills, ways to recognize the symptoms of conflict, insights on team-building skills, the development of training and research objectives, the management of mentorship teams and consultants, information on research ethics, and the availability of training and support services for the scholars.  Sessions are free, many provide Continuing Education credit and only a few provide lunch.  Most PDFA Training sessions are aimed at faculty participants only while others are open to postdocs, graduate students and others on campus.  It is very important to read the event details to know if you are eligible to attend when registering for a program.

Mentors & Mentees

The KU Mentoring Program

The School of Medicine Faculty Development Program was launched in 2006 and has many valuable tools and resources for mentors and mentees.  We encourage mentors and mentee in the program to utilize the SOM’s Faculty Mentoring Handbook as a guidebook for success with your mentoring relationship.

  • Meetings should be scheduled by the mentee or their administrative assistant following the guidelines provided to them by the mentee. The mentee is the individual in need of mentoring so it is their responsibility to schedule the appointments.
  • To begin, a frequency of meeting at least once per month is highly recommended.
  • Mentees and mentors will determine together at the first meeting:
    1. the recordkeeping tools they wish to use as documents which will reflect the progress made over time, both the mentees growth as a junior member of the faculty and the mentors success in working with the junior member;
    2. the items, documents, tools or forms each need to bring to meetings;
    3. the frequency the mentee should bring their updated CV (in P&T format for faculty members) to these meetings. At minimum, the CV should be updated every 3 months
  • Below is a sampling of all forms and tools in the handbook
