William T. Kemper Fellowship for Teaching Excellence

History

The W.T. Kemper Awards for Teaching Excellence recognizes outstanding KU teachers and advisers chosen by a selection committee. The initial program, although now extended another 10 years, was established as a 10-year program and the awards were established by a $500,000 fund from the William T. Kemper Foundation Commerce Bank, Trustee, and $500,000 in matching funds from the KU Endowment Association. This award is intended to honor faculty who have demonstrated outstanding teaching and advising. For this award, teaching and advising are to be considered in their broadest senses. Teaching may be defined to include work with students at any level and in a wide variety of settings in which instructional activity occurs at a comprehensive university. Evidence of superior advising should illustrate the nominee’s concern for student development beyond the normal expectations for advising held for each faculty member at this institution. Deadline for nominations is in April each year with presentations are made by the Chancellor at a class session.

Criteria/Eligibility

  • Full time KU faculty who have completed a minimum of 3 years in a tenured or tenure-track position.
  • Past winners not eligible again for five years.

Required Materials --
MATERIALS NOT PREPARED IN THIS MANNER WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED.

The nominator or a person chosen by the nominator, working with the nominee, is responsible for assembling the required material. The length of the nomination materials is not of primary importance.

  • The nominee must provide in his/her own words a statement explicitly outlining his/her instructional and advising goals and strategies. This statement must not exceed two double-spaced pages.
  • A concise rιsumι (not to exceed two pages).
  • A listing of courses taught and the number of students in each, and other instructional and advising activities during the preceding five years (not to exceed two pages).
  • Materials evaluating instruction, advising, and public service. This section may include summaries of student surveys, evaluations of teaching effectiveness by peers, results of assessment of student learning, or other relevant methods of evaluation over the past five years. Numerical data from student teaching evaluations are requested by the selection committee. Please include the departmental or school mean as an aid in considering the nominee's numerical data when such data are available. Do not include copies of individual student or course forms/sheets. Summaries and selected comments may be included.
  • Letters from the chair and/or dean are required. No more than six additional letters of support from colleagues, staff members, and current or former students may be included. Letters from colleagues and former students are particularly useful instruments for conveying the quality of a nominee's advising strengths and public service activities.
  • The membership of the Selection Committee will be kept anonymous.
