Applying to KU School of Medicine (including Early Decision Program, MD/PhD, and Scholars in Rural Health)
Technical Standards and Requirements
Combined degree programs:
Masters in Health Policy Management
SOM HomeThe University of Kansas considers only applicants who are citizens or permanent residents of the United States. An applicant who is not a citizen must submit a photocopy of his or her permanent resident visa.
All applicants must post MCAT scores. For the 2010 entering class, scores earned within the last three years (2007-2009) are accepted. The latest MCAT test date accepted for Early Decision Program applicants is July 17, 2009, and the latest test date accepted for regular decision applicants is September 12, 2009. Although MCAT scores are submitted to medical schools via AMCAS, the AMCAS application may be submitted before sitting for the MCAT. AMCAS will forward all scores to the schools to which each applicant has applied.
The application file will not be considered complete (nor will it be reviewed) until expected exam scores have been received. If you choose to add another test date after submission of your AMCAS application, you must update your AMCAS application to reflect the new test date. Your application will not be reviewed until the new exam scores are received. If additional MCAT scores are received for an application that has already been processed, another review will not be conducted.
MCAT information and online registration is available at http://www.aamc.org/students/mcat/start.htm
All applicants must apply through AMCAS. Online application information is available at http://www.aamc.org/students/amcas/start.htm. Based upon official transcripts from all colleges and universities from which you have earned college credit, AMCAS will verify the academic record section of your AMCAS application. To avoid processing delays at AMCAS, you should follow the instructions given within the AMCAS application to request official transcripts. Once verified by AMCAS, your application will be sent to the medical schools to which you have applied. (Do not have official transcripts sent to the University of Kansas until requested.)
Although AMCAS has a deadline of August 1 for Early Decision Program applicants, you are strongly encouraged to submit your EDP application by July 1. The regular decision AMCAS application deadline for KU is October 15 (with September 1 strongly encouraged), and the MD/PhD AMCAS application deadline is also October 15.
All applicants must complete the online KU supplemental application. Upon our receipt of your AMCAS application data, you will be sent an email containing a link and password to the supplemental application. The EDP deadline for completion of the supplemental application is September 1, and the regular decision deadline is November 15.
Applicants who are not residents of the State of Kansas must pay a non-refundable application fee of $50. The nonresident fee may be waived only if the AMCAS fee waiver has been granted and is so noted in the AMCAS application.
Applicants must have between three and five letters of recommendation submitted on their behalf. Applicants whose premedical advisor or advising committee writes one summary letter must have submitted between two and four additional letters of recommendation. We request letters from a variety of sources—faculty, employers, supervisors, or other persons who know you well and can be regarded as objective evaluators.
Our Waiver of Access form includes the address to which letters should be submitted. If your undergraduate school has a waiver of access form, it is permissible to use that form.
For the 2009-2010 admissions cycle, the KU School of Medicine Office of Admissions is transitioning to the AMCAS letter service. As you complete the AMCAS application, you will indicate the sources of your letters. AMCAS will collect the letters and, when all have been received, will electronically forward them to each medical school. If your school uses another letter service (VirtualEvals or Interfolio), those letters will be loaded into the AMCAS service.
If your letter authors (faculty or other) will submit their letters individually, they can also directly access the AMCAS letter writer service. Each author can choose to mail the letter as a hard copy to AMCAS or to use the Letter Writer Application to upload a PDF version of the letter.
In addition to the Waiver of Access form, remember to provide each of your letter authors with the AMCAS Letter Request form printed from the AMCAS application.
Complete information about the AMCAS letter service is available at http://www.aamc.org/students/amcas/faq/amcasletters.htm. The School of Medicine strongly desires all letters to be transmitted to us via the AMCAS letter service. If this request will cause undue hardship upon a letter author, we will, during this transition year, accept letters directly from the author.
Deadlines for receipt of letters of recommendation are September 1 for Early Decision Program applicants and November 15 for regular decision and MD/PhD applicants.
Selected applicants are invited for interview in Kansas City. (There are no off-campus interviews.) Interviews are conducted in two- or three-day blocks each month from September (for EDP) through February. Invitations are extended by email approximately three weeks in advance of the interview date.
The interview day includes two 30-minute interviews conducted by one or two members of the interviewer panel. Other activities include a presentation on financial aid, discussion of the curriculum and student life, and lunch and a campus tour with current medical students.
