How to Apply

Doctor of Philosophy

The following materials are required for application to the Doctor of Philosophy degree program. Prospective students can apply using the KU Medical Center Online Application.

  • Graduate application to the School of Nursing, online at
  • $60 nonrefundable application fee.
  • Official transcript(s) of all college coursework
  • Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores
  • A statement of career goals and research interests.
  • References from three doctorally prepared individuals who are able to attest to the applicant's ability to engage in scholarly activity. At least one reference should be from the applicant's nursing program.
  • Resume/Curriculum Vitae, describing the applicant's educational and experiential background.
  • Evidence of current registered nurse licensure in at least one state of the United States. Upon admission, students will need to meet additional licensure and participation requirements. 

After an initial review by the Admissions Committee, certain candidates will be selected to progress to the next stage of the application process. These candidates will be contacted by email and asked to respond in writing to a specific set of questions. A very short time frame will be allowed for the receipt of the responses. The responses will be reviewed by the Admissions Committee and candidates will be informed of the decisions of the Committee as soon as possible.


 All applications must be received by the following deadlines:

  • Dec. 1 for Summer semester 
  • Sept.1 for Spring semester (if space is available).

Admission decisions for each semester are finalized approximately eight weeks after the application deadline. All applicants are notified of their admission status with mailed letters from the Associate Dean for Student Affairs.
