Facilities and Equipment

The Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Kansas Medical Center (KUMC) treats approximately 1,000 new patients per year. Annually, this includes over 700 simulations and approximately 1,200 patients in follow-up care, breaking down to average approximately 60 on treatment appointments per day.  A broad spectrum of treatments are available for patient care, including brachytherapy (both low-dose-rate and high-dose-rate) for the treatment of breast, prostate, gynecologic, lung, gastrointestinal, head and neck cancers, and soft-tissue sarcomas; stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS); stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT); intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) and Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT). 

In addition to the location at KUMC, the Department also includes the Kansas City Cancer Center (KCCC) facilities located across the Greater Kansas City Metro Area.  Locations include:

• St. Mary's Hospital Blue Springs - Blue Springs, MO     
• East - Lee's Summit, MO                                                
• South - Kansas City, KS
• Southwest - Overland Park, KS
• Shawnee Mission - Shawnee Mission, KS
• North - Kansas City, MO

Residents will complete rotations at the KCCC North, East, and Southwest locations. Each KCCC clinic averages approximately 440 new patient consultations and 7,350 on-treatment patients per year. The North and East clinics provide an opportunity for residents to experience treatment modalities of MammoSite and Tomotherapy. Residents will rotate to the Southwest clinic to complete the pediatric rotation. These rotations provide residents an opportunity to experience service in a community clinic practice.
