Faculty Development, Mentoring, and Teaching

In alignment with the University of Kansas School of Medicine's mission, vision, and values, faculty in the Department of Radiation Oncology are provided a supportive environment where they can achieve their full potential in the areas of clinical medicine, research, scholarship, teaching, and service.  The department recognizes that junior faculty need both specific / content-oriented mentoring (e.g., specialty-specific career information) and content expertise (e.g., teaching skills, or professional writing skills used in grant writing, publications and manuscripts), as well as overall career advice relevant to advancing as a medical school faculty member.  The department recognizes that preparing the next generation of radiation oncologists, physicists, and radiobiologists by developing current junior faculty members is essential to the continued success of the department and the future of radiation oncology. To that end, the department's goal is to establish, develop, and facilitate mutually-beneficial mentoring relationships.  In these relationships, mentees plan, learn, and grow while simultaneously mentors are able to enjoy rewarding experiences by motivating and inspiring others.  The Departmental Faculty Development and Mentoring Programs include the following processes: 


Faculty Appointment

New faculty members receive a Letter-of-Offer from the Departmental Chair that includes the following information:

  • Academic title / rank
  • Break down of clinical, research, teaching, and service time allotments
  • Professional development resources / opportunities
  • Assignment of a faculty mentor
  • Annual faculty review information / instructions / expectations
  • Administrative resources available to faculty

Faculty Development

The Department Chair meets with all faculty members on a regular basis (usually once every 4 months) to assist / assess progress in faculty development, including mutually established goals in areas of clinical service, research, scholarship, and teaching for the current academic year.

Faculty members are encouraged to participate in the following organizations that provide teaching skills in the areas of clinical medicine, leadership, education, research, scholarship, and service:

Faculty Mentoring

Each new faculty member is assigned a mentor, and the faculty member meets with their mentor as follows:

  • Biannual meetings between the mentor and faculty member to establish goals in the areas of clinical service, teaching / education, research, scholarship, and service including regular review of these goals.
  • Annual meeting of the Departmental Mentoring Committee to assess and evaluate mentee and provide feedback and recommendations to both mentee and Department Chair.

Faculty Teaching

The department prepares its faculty members for teaching using a number of mechanisms.  The faculty members are primarily engaged in teaching of the residents in the following major settings:

  • Annual Clinical Didactic Lecture Series
  • Annual Kansas City-Wide Mock Oral Board Examination
  • Weekly On-treatment Management Chart Rounds with the Residents
  • Weekly New Patient Peer Review Chart Rounds with Residents
  • Daily One-on-One Teaching of the Residents by the Attending Faculty Member

Each faculty member is assessed and evaluated on their teaching skills through a number of mechanisms:

  • At the annual Resident Education Committee Meeting, annual feedback on the faculty members' teaching skills is received from the residents.  This evaluation is then shared by the Residency Training Program Director / Chair / Mentor with each Faculty Member including ways to improve their teaching skills.
  • Faculty members receive immediate feedback on their teaching skills (after the Exam) at the Annual Kansas City-Wide Mock Oral Board Examination from Examinees which is shared by the Program Director / Chair.
  • Annual Faculty Assessment by the Chair which includes assessment of the faculty members' teaching skills and methods by which to improve these skills.

Promotion and Tenure

The Departmental Promotion and Tenure Committee evaluates the curriculum vitae of each junior faculty member and provides advice and recommendations to both the junior faculty member and the Department Chair regarding the professional development activities that would prepare the faculty member for successful promotion in their respective academic track.

The Faculty Development and Mentoring Program will provide a mechanism to assist and guide junior faculty through their career, promoting the advancement and retention of new faculty into our next generation of academic physicians and researcher leaders.
