Rural Engagement in Primary Care for Optimizing Weight Reduction (RE-POWER)

Our long term objective in this 3-state study is to develop an evidence-based and sustainable model for the treatment of obesity in primary care among rural residents who suffer disproportionately from obesity and obesity-related illnesses, including diabetes, heart disease, and arthritis.  Doctors and researchers from the University of Kansas Medical Center, University of Nebraska Medical Center and Marshfield Clinic in Wisconsin are teaming up to test three types of weight management programs in primary care offices throughout the rural Midwest.  Our scientific mission is to enhance access to effective weight loss programs and lifestyle interventions by discovering optimal ways for implementing them into healthcare settings.  Our clinical mission is to empower people to improve their health and well-being through scientifically driven and patient-centered programs that promote healthy eating, physical activity, and successful long-term weight control.

Group Phone-Based Weight Control among Rural Breast Cancer Survivors

This behavioral RCT will compare the impact of group phone-based lifestyle intervention to mail-only intervention on weight loss maintenance, quality of life, and breast cancer biomarkers among rural breast cancer survivors.

Studies of Reward Processing in Nicotine Addiction and Obesity

Our goal is to examine neural responses during impulsive decision-making in nicotine addicted, obese and healthy groups using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI).


Impacting Diet and Sedentary Behaviors in Adolescents through Handheld Computers

This study will test the feasibility and acceptability of a three-month intervention delivered to adolescents via handheld computer and explore three- and six-month changes in body mass index, fruit and vegetable consumption, TV/screen time, and sugar-sweetened beverages.

Reducing Sedentary Behavior to Prevent Weight Regain among Breast Cancer Survivors

Pilot RCT comparing standard weight loss maintenance intervention to the same intervention plus an additional sedentary behavior change component with device-based real time feedback on weight and insulin changes among breast cancer survivors.

The Impact of Exercise on Brain Responses to Smoking Cues

The goal of this project is to identify brain responses to smoking cues in light smokers. Achieving this objective will provide an understanding of smoking reward among light smokers. We will test the working hypothesis that light smokers are more responsive to smoking cues than non-smoking cues.

Moderate Intensity Exercise as an Adjunct to Smoking Cessation Treatment for African American Women

The objective of this project is to develop and pilot a moderate intensity exercise program (150 min/week) that obtains high rates of exercise adherence and facilitates quitting when delivered as an adjunct to our standard 7-week smoking cessation intervention (bupropion and behavioral counseling) for AA women.


Rural Lifestyle Eating and Activity Program

We propose to conduct a single-blind, randomized controlled "effectiveness" trial in obese adults (N=540) to evaluate the effects of extended-care programs delivered via individual or group telephone counseling, compared to a health education control (CTRL) condition, on long-term (22-month) changes in body weight.

Neuroimaging Studies of Reward, Impulsivity, and Adherence to an Exercise Program

Promoting Walking in African Americans with Peripheral Arterial Disease

The overall objective of this application is to determine the efficacy of our PACE protocol, enhanced by adding motivational interviewing and culturally sensitive print material, to improve lower limb function in African Americans with peripheral arterial disease.
