Children’s Pediatric Fellowship

Children’s Mercy Hospitals and Clinics (CMHC) Pediatric Medicine and Rehabilitation department offers a two-year ACGME accredited fellowship designed to develop advanced skills in the diagnosis and treatment of children with disabilities. Fellows will have completed an approved residency training program in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and may have additionally completed a Pediatrics Residency or a joint Pediatrics/PM&R Residency. The clinical and didactic experiences are intended to expand their knowledge of pediatric conditions resulting in disability, including traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, cerebral palsy, neuromuscular disease, neural tube defects, amputations and others in order to prepare them for a successful pediatric rehabilitation practice. The PM&R curriculum is divided into block rotations of three months each. Educational programs are held in conjunction with the University of Kansas Medical Center Core Rehabilitation Medicine Program.

Musculoskeletal/Spine Fellowship

The purpose of the one year Musculoskeletal/Spine Fellowship to provide training in the advanced diagnosis and comprehensive management of acute and chronic musculoskeletal/spine disease. 

The Marc A. Asher, MD Spine Center at the University of Kansas Medical Center is a brand new 23,000 square foot multidisciplinary facility with on-site clinics, imaging (ultrasound, x-ray, CT and MRI), electrodiagnostics lab, therapy gym and surgery center.  The fellow will work and learn in this dynamic environment under the guidance of the program director and its many faculty.  Faculty include specialists from PM&R, Orthopaedic Surgery, Neurosurgery and Anesthesia.  The fellow will be exposed to a broad range of procedures and fluoroscopic-guided percutaneous interventions.  Additionally, the fellow will have an integral role in education through interactions with residents and medical students, and by contributing to and organizing aspects of the regular didactic program, spine indications conference and cadaver lab sessions.  The fellowship fosters clinical research and the fellow is expected to publish in a peer reviewed journal.  Basic science research opportunities are available through interdisciplinary efforts for those interested.

Currently 2 positions are available, one starting January 1, 2013, the second starting July 1, 2013.  Fellows will receive Clinical Instructor faculty appointments with a stipend included.  Fellows must be eligible for a Kansas license and be Board Certified or Board eligible in PM&R prior to beginning the Fellowship. This one-year fellowship is non-ACGME accredited.

Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Traumatic Brain Injury Fellowship

The Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at Kansas University Medical Center is pleased to announce the new fellowship in Traumatic Brain Injury Rehabilitation. This multidisciplinary one year fellowship is designed to foster growth and development of a physician leader clinical care, research and leadership in polytrauma, traumatic brain injury and related neuroscience fields. Teaching faculty include Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Specialists, Neurosurgeons, Neurologists, Psychologists, and Basic Science Researchers with successful ongoing NIH funded research in the field of Brain Injury.
