Cancer Rehabilitation
The purpose of the Cancer Rehabilitation Program at KUMC is restore function, decrease pain and improve the quality of life in our Oncology patients. Our Cancer Rehabilitation program takes an active role in supporting your oncologists and your primary care physicians in dealing with these ailments.
The emphasis of this special program is in evaluating and treating the neuromuscular, musculoskeletal, and functional complications that patients sometimes develop as a result of cancer and cancer treatments. These complications can include acute and chronic pain, fatigue, weakness, muscle spasms, neuropathy, myopathy, deconditioning, contractures, swallowing and chewing problems, radiation fibrosis, dystonia, spasticity, plegia, spinal cord injury, lymphedema, amputation, and gait disorders.
Our treatment strategy is often multimodal, and our physician will often collaborate with a team of specialists to provide comprehensive treatments for cancer-related impairments and disability using a combination of physical, occupational, and/or lymphedema therapy, assistive devices, orthotics, prosthetics, medications, patient education and, when needed, joint and soft tissue injections including botulinum toxin as well as other agents to optimize patients’ function and improve their overall quality of life.
