I am originally from West Plains, Mo. I attended Missouri State University for my B.S. and M.S. in Cell and Molecular Biology. At MSU I worked under Rich Garrad, PhD, looking at the functions of the Tat peptide (Transactivator of Transcription) as a cell penetrating peptide for macromolecular drug delivery. In my free time I love to go to concerts, hang out with friends, and go to sporting events. Go Chiefs!

Research Interests

I am currently working with Udayan Apte, PhD, here at KU Med. I am studying the role of the transcription factor HNF4 alpha, or hepatocyte nuclear factor 4 alpha, in the regulation of hepatocyte proliferation. This transcription factor is known to be crucially involved in the differentiation of hepatocytes in the liver. We believe that it may also be involved in the inhibition of hepatocyte proliferation. My preliminary work suggests that deletion of HNF4alpha in the adult liver results in increased cell proliferation. We have also found up regulation of several cell cycle genes in livers with HNF4alpha deletion. Future goals will focus on determining the mechanism by which HNF4 alpha is regulating these genes and how this can be applied to hepatocellular carcinomas.
