Promotion and Tenure Committee

[Kansas City campus | Wichita campus]

The Promotion and Tenure Committee makes recommendations to the Executive Dean and Dean of the Wichita campus concerning academic promotion and/or award of tenure for faculty members. Organizationally, the joint committee "School of Medicine Promotion and Tenure Committee" has two constituent subcommittees, one on each campus. Members of the joint committee are also members of the campus committees.

Membership

  • Four professors with tenure in basic science departments
  • Four professors with tenure In Kansas City clinical departments
  • One at-large tenured professor from the Kansas City campus
  • Six professors from the Wichita campus

Duties

The committee makes recommendations concerning:

  • Review and make recommendations regarding those individuals considered for promotion and/or tenure on each Campus;
  • Make recommendations regarding uniform policies and procedures to be used to evaluate individuals considered for promotion and/or tenure on each Campus and shall forward these recommendations via the Deans of each Campus for comment, and then to the Executive Committee for action;
  • Provide an annual summary report of its activities to the Executive Committee; and
  • Determine, by each campus committee, the operational procedures to be followed on their respective campuses regarding the review of:
  • Applications of faculty members considered for promotion and/or tenure;
  • Recommendations for tenure for newly appointed faculty at any rank;
  • Qualifications of new faculty proposed for appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or above; and
  • Other faculty appointments as requested by the Executive Dean or Dean, Wichita campus.

Process

The joint committee meets prior to the review process and after the process has been completed at the campus level. The pre-review meeting in late summer/early fall sets procedures and process issues for the review cycle. The second meeting in January reviews the recommendations from both campuses and develops the final recommendations to the respective Deans.

Kansas City Campus Promotion and Tenure Committee

The Kansas City Promotion and Tenure Committee makes recommendations concerning:

  • Nominations for academic promotion and/or award of tenure from faculty members on the Kansas City campus
  • Award of tenure to newly-appointed faculty members on the Kansas City campus
  • Rank of new faculty members proposed for appointment at the rank of associate professor or professor

Membership

  • Six tenured professors elected by the Faculty
  • Three tenured professors appointed by the Executive Dean

The membership must consist of four members of basic science departments, four members of clinical departments, and one member-at-large. Departmental chairpersons are not eligible for membership.
