The Movement Disorder Surgery Program was established at the University of Kansas Medical Center in 1993. The University of Kansas Medical Center was one of the primary centers for the investigation of deep brain stimulation for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease and tremor before approval by the FDA. The University of Kansas Medical Center remains a leader in the use and research of deep brain stimulation for movement disorders such as Parkinson’s disease, tremor and dystonia. To be evaluated at the center, a referral is required from a physician.
