Department Resources

The OTOHNS Department has a variety of resources available to residents; such as, excellent computer facilities with applications programs for word processing, spreadsheets, statistical analysis, reference retrieval, and document and figure scanning. Residents have a shared room within the department equipped with desks, phones, stereo and computers. The OTOHNS call room is located on OTOHNS Ward 53, which also has an OTOHNS treatment room. This treatment room is stocked with a microscope and endoscopes for performing inpatient consultation exams and procedures, minimizing the need to transport patients to the outpatient clinical area. A portable Cobra endoscope and exam cart is available for ICU consultations and exams.

The department outpatient clinic at KUMC has twelve exam rooms; three procedure rooms with microscopes, endoscopes and video towers; a Facial Plastics suite; and two minor operating rooms. Adjacent audiology, vestibular, and voice laboratories are also available for patient evaluation and treatment. The outpatient clinic is staffed with several nurses, physician assistants, and a patient care coordinator. The clinic is next to the department's academic offices and conference room.

The department's outpatient clinic employs Centricity^TM Electronic Medical Records, which links to laboratory results and PACS radiology system for streamlined care. The University provides a PDA to each incoming resident to track duty hours and clinical data. The KUMC computer network provides email and Internet access, as well as access to library's medical literature database. Facilities for image analysis and graphics are supplemented by extensive multimedia facilities, including a large format poster printer in the MRRC.

The newly renovated department library is near the clinic area and contains recent textbooks and bound OTOHNS journals. This is supplemented by the comprehensive KUMC Dykes Library, which has undergone a recent renovation and now has an updated computer-based search, and student classrooms and testing rooms. Additionally, the VAMC and CMH also have libraries on site for resident and faculty use.
