International Outreach

The Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery has long supported medical work overseas, starting in Nepal and Kyrgyzstan in the 1990s. The department has supported participation of faculty and residents in medical mission trips to Mexico, the Philippines, Africa and Guatemala. In 2004, the department co-founded the mission to Antigua, Guatemala; since then, the mission has become an annual tradition involving over 70 participants, and completing over 80 surgeries and 600 patient visits in just six days. The department aims for all willing residents to participate in a medical mission trip during their later years of residency training, with the hope that they will continue to be involved after graduation.
