International Outreach

The KU Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery has a long tradition of supporting medical service trips, dating back to the 1990's when Dr. Larry Hoover first took residents to Nepal and Kyrgyzstan. The Department continues to support faculty and resident participation. In 2004, the Department co-founded a medical service for Antigua, Guatemala; since then, the service trip has become an annual tradition involving over 70 participants, and completing over 80 surgeries and 600 patient visits over the six days of the trip. The Department aims for all willing residents to participate in a medical service trip during residency training, with the hope that they will continue to be involved after graduation.  In recent years, residents have participated in service trips to Guatemala, Uganda, India and the Philippines.
