The Core Conference for the Orthopedic Surgery Residency Program at the University of Kansas Medical Center is held each Wednesday morning from 6:30 - 9:30 am. throughout the year. The summer anatomy sessions are held at the beginning of each academic year from July through September. Ten anatomical sites are reviewed by anatomy and physical exam didactic lectures along with dissection. During October the focus is on reviews to help prepare the residents for the Orthopaedic In-Service Training Exam. The remainder of the year includes JBJS Journal Club, specialty specific journals clubs, review of papers from the JAAOS, and continuation of the core curriculum which is adapted from the AAOS Comprehensive Orthopaedic Review. Most lectures are given by the orthopedic surgery faculty. However, senior residents are required to present on one topic a year, as well as facilitate the discussions from the journal readings assigned each week.
The Indications and Imaging Study Conference is held the 1st, 3rd, 4th, and 5th Tuesday morning of each month from 7:00 - 8:00 am. The PGY-3 resident rotating on the research rotation is charged with pulling the x-rays and preparing the presentation each week. All KU faculty and residents are required to attend this conference.
The GME conference is held the 2nd Tuesday of each month from 6:30 - 7:30 am. All residents and fellows at the University of Kansas Medical Center attend. The series provides accessible and valuable instruction aligned with the ACGME competencies and supports the hospital's quality and safety initiatives.
Spine Conference is held each Thursday morning from 7:00 - 8:00 am. Residents rotating on the service, as well as the faculty, PA, and nursing staff attend the conference. Upcoming surgical cases are reviewed and planned for.
Trauma Conference is also held each Thursday morning from 7:00 - 8:00 am on the orthopedic surgery inpatient floor. Residents rotating on the service and the trauma faculty attend the conference. All aspects of trauma injuries and care are covered.
An arthroscopy lab is held every other month on the 3rd Wednesday afternoon from 3:00 - 6:00 pm in the lab of the Orthopedic Surgery Research Center. Residents on the sports medicine service are expected to attend. However all orthopedic residents are invited.
A sports medicine journal club is held on the 2nd Friday of each month from 7:00 - 8:00 am. The sports medicine faculty, as well as community physicians, and residents on the service attend. Three journal articles are reviewed each month.
Research Conference is held one Thursday morning a month from 8:00 - 9:00 am. Members of the Research Committee and the PGY-3 residents attend. Each research project is reviewed and status updated.
The Department of Orthopedic Surgery sponsors the Leonard F. Peltier Lecture each year in mid June. A nationally known guest speaker is invited to present two scientific papers. In addition the PGY-5 residents present their research and the PGY-3 and -4 residents each present an interesting case study. All faculty and residents are required to attend and alumni and community physicians are invited.
In addition the orthopedic surgery residents are also encouraged to participate and attend the Kansas Orthopaedic Society Annual Meeting held each September, as well as the Kansas City Orthopaedic Society meeting held in the fall of each year.
