Residency Program

The Orthopedic Surgery Residency Program at the University of Kansas School of Medicine accepts four new residents each year through the National Resident Matching Program. Applicants must graduate from a LCME-accredited medical school in the United States or Canada and be able to obtain Kansas and Missouri medical licenses. Approximately 500 ERAS applications are received each year and of those 50 are invited for interviews. Interviews are usually scheduled for the second Saturday in December and second or third Saturday in January. KUMC students and others who have rotated on our services are invited to interview the third or fifth Friday in November. During interviews the applicants have the opportunity to meet with most, if not all, of the faculty and residents and take a tour of the facilities. Interviewees are ranked on the basis of their preparedness, ability, aptitude, academic credentials, communication skills and personal demeanor. The University of Kansas Orthopedic Surgery Program does not discriminate with regard to sex, race, age, religion, color, national origin, disability, or veteran status. Following interviews, the faculty meets to prepare a rank list in preparation for the final rank list submission. The final NRMP match results are then available in March.

The Orthopedic Surgery Residency Program is a comprehensive, intense five-year training program that graduates knowledgeable, skilled, compassionate, and ethical orthopedic surgeons who are dedicated to lifelong learning. Our superb facilities, teaching staff, and curriculum are integral to this impressive tradition, along with the residents who are crucial to the success of the training program. As members of a close-knit team, residents build a solid base of knowledge and develop surgical skills to function as outstanding orthopedic surgeons in both private and academic settings.
