KU Eye Surgery & Laser Center

The Department of Ophthalmology is pleased to announce the addition of the KU Eye Surgery and Laser Center, LLC.  In April 2014, we celebrated the grand opening of this ambulatory surgery center (ASC), which features two outpatient operating rooms - with the potential to open a third - as well as eight pre-operative and recovery bays.  (Click here to link to the original article.)

Having this onsite ASC is a major step for convenience, creating an alternative for healthy adults (18 years and old) for procedures, such as cataracts, glaucoma, retinal, cornea, oculoplastics, neuro-ophthalmology,  and similar procedures.  This new facility allows for additional operating time and space for the growing faculty at KU Eye.  The department's eight surgeons performed 1,200 surgeries last year, most of them at the main campus and KU MedWest. While some KU Eye procedures will continue to be performed at those locations, the majority now are slated for the new ASC, which has the capacity for 2,500 a year.

Because the center is geared to single-specialty outpatient procedures, surgery costs are lower, staff specializes in ophthalmic surgeries and patient prep and discharge is faster. They now will spend as little as 90 minutes at KU Eye for a 20-minute surgery; at the main campus, it was at least four hours total.  No longer limited by block surgery time on the main campus, there is much greater flexibility in when cases can be scheduled.
