A brain tumor is a growth of abnormal cells in the tissues of the brain. Brain tumors can be benign or malignant. They can start in the brain (primary brain tumor) or spread from somewhere else in the body (metastatic tumor). Many different types of tumors exist depending on the cell of origin. Gliomas and meningiomas are the most common primary brain tumors.
The treatment of a brain tumor depends on the type, size, and location of the mass as well as the clinical condition of the patients. The University of Kansas offers a multidisciplinary approach for the management of theses tumors including neurosurgery, oncology and radiation oncology. The treatment frequently includes a combination of surgery, radiation and chemotherapy. Advances techniques and technologies are used to optimize patients’ outcome.
