A priority of the division is basic and clinical/translational research leading to improvements in the care of patients with kidney diseases. The Kidney Institute at the University of Kansas Medical Center, established in 2000, serves this important mission.

• Rich, diverse research environment: 30 faculty members are drawn from seven different departments. The Kidney Institute is closely integrated with the Division of Nephrology and Hypertension, serving as its research arm and providing an independent organizational structure that reports directly to the dean and coordinates kidney-related research at the institutional level.
• Exceptionally well-funded: Kidney Institute investigators received over $5 million in NIH research support for 2010-11.
• Major areas of research focus: renal development, signal transduction, transport physiology, polycystic kidney disease, mineral metabolism, and health services research/outcomes research.
