Division of Nephrology and Hypertension

The Division of Nephrology and Hypertension at the University of Kansas Medical Center has a proud tradition of achievement in clinical care, education and research.

Our faculty physicians are nationally and internationally renowned experts in treating kidney diseases and in the clinical translational and basic science leading to therapeutic breakthroughs.

Our scientists and clinician-investigators perform a broad range of research from basic molecular and cellular biology to translational and clinical research. We are one of very few nephrology divisions with a large integrated clinical and basic research program.

• Top-notch research facilities: Our Kidney Institute includes 30 research faculty, 23,000 square feet of state-of-the-art laboratory space, and more than $5 million per year in NIH research funding.
• Outstanding patient care: University of Kansas Hospital ranked No. 15 for care of patients with Kidney Disorders in 2012-13 U.S. News & World Report's Best Hospitals list (fourth consecutive year in top 50 list).
• Strong kidney, liver, pancreas transplantation programs: 1,700 kidneys transplanted since 1969 (105 kidneys in 2011), and one of the lowest waiting list times in the nation (19 months).
• PKD expertise: Internationally recognized for clinical care and research in polycystic kidney disease (PKD), particularly through the work of Dr. Jared Grantham, American Society of Nephrology Homer Smith awardee and co-founder of the PKD Research Foundation.
• Recognized publication leader: The Journal of the American Society of Nephrology (JASN), the highest ranked journal in nephrology, was founded at KU in 1990 by Dr. Grantham.
