Graduate Student Grievance Policy

The Department of Molecular and Integrative Physiology seeks actively to foster a collegial and cooperative atmosphere among students and faculty. All members of this department are expected to act in a supportive and understanding manner. In this spirit, the Department expects that open communication between students and faculty will be the norm, and that this will help to avert misunderstandings. However, there may be occasions when issues of contention arise between students and faculty members. In the event of a conflict that cannot be readily resolved between a student and a faculty member of any Department, the first step will be to contact the Graduate Director* in the Department of MoleTcular and Integrative Physiology, so that steps may be taken to reconcile the matter.

Normally, this will consist of discussions between the parties, with attempts to determine a satisfactory resolution. In the event that this does not resolve the issue, it is the privilege of either party to request that the matter be heard formally before the entire GSAC**, who will then render an opinion on the matter and propose steps toward resolution. If, for any reason, the student is not satisfied with the outcome, the matter may then be taken before the Chairman of the Department***. This is the final Departmental authority with regard to Grievance proceedings. If not satisfied after departmental grievance procedures have been exhausted, the student may appeal to higher university authorities. University grievance procedures are specified in the Graduate School Catalog and the University of Kansas Medical Center Student Planner and Handbook.

*Should the grievance involve the Graduate Director, another member of the Graduate Student Advisory Committee (GSAC) will act as a mediator.

**Should the grievance involve a member of the GSAC, then that member will abstain from hearing the grievance.

***Should the grievance involve the Chairman, the GSAC shall appoint a faculty member as a mediator.
