Teaching and the Medical Curriculum

The department has responsibility for Cardiopulmonary and Renal-Endocrine Modules. The following approaches are used in these modules:
  • All Powerpoints are reviewed by the module director prior to the lecture and the module director relays any concerns regarding content to the respective faculty person.
  • To improve integration of content across lectures within the module, faculty are informed of content of material related to their lecture that has been presented in previous lectures by other faculty or will be presented in the future by other faculty.
  • Module director attends all lectures and discusses with the faculty person any concerns regarding the lecture presentation and makes suggestions for improving the lecture presentation.
  • Prior to beginning a teaching assignment, new faculty members observe, either live or through recordings, lectures given by experienced senior members of the faculty. 
  • A facilitator training session is provided prior to small group COPD conference in cardiopulmonary module.
  • Faculty are provided instructions as to how to write good exam questions. 
  • Faculty are provided the results of formal student evaluations of lectures conducted by Office of Medical Education at the end of the module.

Research Mentoring

  • Junior faculty members are assigned a research mentor(s) by the Chair.
  • Meet our department's research experts
  • Faculty members are informed of formal programs organized by the School of Medicine and encouraged to attend. These programs include Professional Grant writing workshops, a variety of workshops on scientific writing, and a variety of topics related to faculty development and teaching skills.   • Grants of faculty members are reviewed internally by mentors and other members of the faculty member's research area before submission to the funding agency.
  • Professional review of grants before submission to the funding agency is an option offered to faculty in some cases where the benefits are expected to justify the cost.
  • The department has as weekly seminar series covering all areas of research interest in the department (see column to the left) the KUMC Calendar of Events is another source of information about seminars being offered by other departments and centers.
  • A departmental visiting scientist program provides faculty members with the opportunity to bring distinguished scientists to the department for seminars and extended discussions about research topics. These visits are highly beneficial in terms of scientific networking and sometimes lead to collaborations and new ideas for research proposals.
  • Regular faculty meetings are held in the department. These often include invited speakers to address specific topics relevant to professional development and research activity. For example, recent presentations have including topics on hiring and salary ranges for research staff, pre- and post-award management of grants, grant accounting, services provided by the Research Institute, salary structure and expectations in basic science and clinical departments, and opportunities for scientific interaction with a local school district. The faculty meetings also provide a forum for discussion of common issues and problems.
  • The department provides post-award support of research activities of faculty including budget reconciliation, budget projection and ordering.
  • Funds for pilot projects are available to faculty members through a variety of programmatic grants including NIH-COBREs, a NIH-K-INBRE grant, NIH CTSA grant and the Cancer Center. Funds are available through the KUMC Research Institute to support pilot and bridging grants in all areas of research (http://www.kumc.edu/kumcri/sponsored-programs-administration/internal-funding-opportunities.html).   • The COBRE and K-INBRE grants also support some multi-year higher budget research proposals.
  • In cases of a grant hiatus, bridging support is available through the department for faculty members and their laboratory.

Department Faculty Development

Road Map for New Faculty
The Department of Molecular & Integrative Physiology strongly desires to see each new faculty member succeed in their career. Success is dependent upon the faculty member's hard work and experience. Our aim is to help them succeed with the least amount of obstacles along the way. To accomplish this, a mentoring committee is individually-tailored for each new faculty member to guide their way through the processes of establishing a laboratory and obtaining promotion.

  1. Prior to Arrival
  • Follow the instructions on the KU School of Medicine New Faculty On-Boarding Program as soon as you sign your offer letter, including but not limited to:
    • Contact Kelly Robertson in Research Institute immediately for complete instructions regarding your lab, policies, grant administration, etc.
    • Health Insurance: coverage does not begin for 30 days from start date (Human Resources website)
    • Shipment of research animals. Contact Laboratory Animal Resources to arrange. Once animals arrive, they are quarantined for approximately eight weeks until they are available for research
  • Purchase of start-up equipment and supplies. Contact Departmental Grant Accountant (tpowers2@kumc.edu , 913-588-7401)

  1. After Arrival
  • A mentoring committee consisting of the departmental chair, Promotion and Tenure committee chair, and one or more research mentors is identified.
  • Meet with Departmental Chair to identify research mentors to provide guidance for establishing a research program at KUMC
  • Meet with department P&T Chair (ngonzale@kumc.edu, 913-945-6959) to discuss requirements for promotion
    • Review the KU School of Medicine Mentoring Toward Promotion and/or Tenure Program for helpful "at-a-glance" information about promotion and tenure
  • Meet with research mentors to discuss issues including:
