Neuroplasticity in recovery of function after stroke. Preclinical models of subcortical stroke.
Our laboratory studies neural plasticity in response to neurological injury and behavioral experience. Currently we are developing a nonhuman primate model to examine the neuroanatomical, neurophysiological and behavioral effects of focal infarcts in the internal capsule, a common site for clincal strokes in the cerebral white matter. This model of white matter infarct will be extremely valuable in future studies examining the underlying mechanisms of recovery after subcortical ischemic stroke and can be used in the development of therapeutic interventions in stroke treatment.
