Infectious, Alcohol & Drug-Induced Liver Injury

HCV Mitochondria graphicLiver injury can be induced by a large number of infectious, toxic and metabolic events each of which have similarities and differences in the mechanisms by which they result in disease. The Liver Injury research group based primarily at KUMC in Kansas City studies mechanisms of diseases caused by viruses, alcohol and hepatotoxic drugs. Important areas of basic, translational and clinical research include Hepatitis C, Hepatitis B, alcoholic hepatitis and acetaminophen-induced liver injury.  This collaborative approach seeks to gain more insight on disease pathogenesis and create more effective approaches to the treatment and prevention of these conditions.
