Excellence in the delivery of compassionate, timely, and state-of-the-art health care to our patients with liver disease has long been, and continues to be the primary focus of our Liver Group at the University of Kansas Medical Center. Our Liver Transplant Program is the most active in the region, and has been able to have shorter than average waiting times and better than average patient outcomes when compared to national averages.
In 2010, the Liver Transplant team performed transplants for 81 patients. We have a large multidisciplinary team of highly trained Hepatologists, Liver Transplant Surgeons, Interventional Radiologists, Therapeutic Endoscopists, Pathologists, Oncologists, Nurse Practitioners, Hepatology Nurses and many others with extensive experience in caring for patients with Liver Disease. We specialize in care for Hepatitis C, Hepatitis B, fatty liver disease, alcoholic liver disease, drug-induced liver disease, genetic and metabolic liver diseases such as Hemochromatosis and Wilson's Disease, Hepatocellular Carcinoma and autoimmune liver diseases such as autoimmune hepatitis, primary biliary cirrhosis and primary sclerosing cholangitis.
Most patients initially contact our Liver Clinical Care Center via our Hepatology Clinic where they are evaluated, treated and/or referred for formal Liver Transplant Evaluation. As the major academic medical center in the Kansas City area we have the most experience in caring for patients with diseases ranging from mild and easily treatable, to more complex liver diseases that require transplantation.
