The clinical arm of the KU Diabetes Institute is represented by the Cray Diabetes Self-Management Center. Specialty diabetes care at the University of Kansas Medical Center has been the focus of the Cray Center since its formation in 1976. As a clinic funded almost entirely by the Cray Medical Research Foundation in Atchison, Kansas, it has been able to provide team-based expert clinical care combined with state-of-the-art self-management education without regard for the "bottom line." In addition to caring for diabetic patients, Cray professional staff members also mentor future healthcare professionals in diabetes management, including medical students, basic and advanced nursing students, and pharmacology students.
The Cray Center also is engaged in clinical research and, at any given time, has a number of research protocols being carried out. Most recently, it is implementing Internet-based diabetes self-management education. The first protocol will seek to address the effectiveness of diet education delivered in three modules in live Internet sessions compared to traditional classroom group education.
