Elective Rotations

Applications timelines:

  • On-site Electives - must be submitted three months ahead of the elective start date and per the below timeline:
    • 3 months prior- application submission due
    • 1 months prior- application submission completed
    • In the event the above timeline is not met, the elective experience will be lost and the resident will be reassigned to a clinical rotation (including consult/ inpatient/ICU experiences)
  • Off-site/International Electives - must be submitted six months ahead of the elective start day and per the below time line:
    • 6 months prior- application submission due
    • 3 months prior- application submission completed
    • In the event the above timeline is not met, the elective experience will be lost and the resident will be reassigned to a clinical rotation (including consult/ inpatient/ICU experiences)
  • Curriculum: Specific electives rotations have focused goals and objectives; however, all electives are based off of the KU Internal Medicine PGY-Based Universal Curriculum.
  • ITE Performance: Satisfactory performance on the ITE is taken into consideration in elective approval.
  • Clinic Compliance: It is your responsibility to review and revise your master schedule to ensure that clinic encounters are not interrupted for any longer than four weeks. Residents failing to meet these requirements will be assigned to another rotation.
  • General Elective Expectations
    • Conference attendance is required during on-site elective experiences
    • As per human resources employee expectations, on-site (KU, KCVA, LVVA) presence is required for >4 hours if a sick or vacation day is not taken

On-Site Electives

Any clinical or non-clinical elective within KU, KCVA, LVVA or an affiliate site. IM program administration will need three months to coordinate this scheduling.

Standing Clinical Electives
For these on-site electives:

  1. Select the appropriate application
  2. Application must be submitted to the IMCHIEFS 3 months ahead of the elective start day and per the timeline above.
  3. Faculty Mentor must be identified on application, willing to supervise your elective and responsible for filling out your evaluation. Mentors must send a one-line email to IMCHIEFS with copy to Dr. Lowry accepting this task

Unique Clinical Electives
For these on-site electives:

  1. Select the appropriate application
  2. Application must be submitted to the IMCHIEFS 3 months ahead of the elective start day and per the timeline above.
  3. Faculty Mentor must be identified on application, willing to supervise your elective and responsible for filling out your evaluation. Mentors must send a one-line email to IMCHIEFS with copy to Dr. Broxterman accepting this task
  4. Final Approval from Dr. Jane Broxterman is required

Research Electives
For these on-site electives:

  1. Select the appropriate application
  2. Application must be submitted to the IMCHIEFS 3 months ahead of the elective start day and per the timeline above.
    • Statement of hypothesis, methods and planned activities (i.e. data collection (chart reviews, laboratory work), data analysis, abstract preparation, meeting presentation, etc.) Special Approvals - IRB, HSC, HIPPA: These are often initiated by your faculty mentor though may require your assistance. You are responsible for knowing the status of these approvals upon your application. These often take months and if not in place at the time of your elective will make it impossible for your to participate in the research and thus take the elective.
  3. Faculty Mentor must be identified on application, willing to supervise your elective and responsible for filling out your evaluation. Mentors must send a one-line email to IMCHIEFS with copy to Dr. Lowry accepting this task
  4. Final Approval from Dr. Becky Lowry is required

Chief Resident Elective
Scheduled experience required for graduating residents selected as Chief Residents for the upcoming academic year. See rotational curriculum.


Off-Site Electives

Off-site electives (outside of KU, KCVA, LVVA) require affiliation agreements. IM program administration will need six months advance notice to work on these.
International Electives
For these electives:

  1. Contact Suzy Williams for the most current application form

    • International Elective Application

  2. Applications must be submitted to Dr. Becky Lowry with copy to IMCHIEFS and Lori Roop from GME Office (lroop@kumc.edu) six-months ahead of the elective start day.

  3. International Programs Approval:
    • Contact Director of the Office of International Programs at least 6 months in advance of any planned overseas travel as part of a KUMC Residency Program 913-588-1480.
  4. Faculty Mentor must be identified on application, willing to supervise your elective and responsible for filling out your evaluation.
  5. Program Expectations
    • Experience Debriefing with International Affairs Office upon return from Elective
    • Development of a scholarly product about Elective Experience for presentation (poster / oral). Suggested venue - Resident Research Day

Domestic Clinical Electives

For these electives:

  1. Select the appropriate application
  2. Submit the completed application to Suzy Williams with copy to Dr. Becky Lowry and IMCHIEFS
  3. Faculty Mentor must be identified on application, willing to supervise your elective and responsible for filling out your evaluation.
  4. Final Approval from Dr. Becky Lowry is required
