Internal Medicine Research Office (IMRO)

From the Vice Chair for Research

Welcome to the research homepage of the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Kansas Medical Center, where we celebrate the pioneering research accomplishments of our researchers. We are proud to acknowledge the long tradition of research excellence among the Internal Medicine faculty at KU.  Building on our reputation for conquering diseases and resolving public health challenges, we have invested in scientific endeavors that result in life-saving medical breakthroughs, and accelerate the translation of innovative research into better health care. Indeed, it is through research that we can advance the knowledge to improve the health of our patients, their lives, and our community.

As an academic department, research is one of our core missions.  To support that mission, our research office is committed to aid individual faculty members and trainees and campus collaborators in finding the tools and resources they need to be competitive in today's increasingly demanding global community of academic research.  We are happy to provide general research support and professional guidance with grants and contracts administration, fiscal management, dissemination of research policies and procedures, and administrative expertise to assist faculty in their efforts to secure funding and conduct high quality research. Through the Office of Scholarly Academic, Research, and Mentoring, our department is also committed to provide the highest level of support and mentoring to our junior faculty to help them grow into leaders of academic medicine.

It is therefore exciting to note that our faculty, trainees, and students are asking questions, finding answers, and addressing problems - resulting in advanced treatment options.  Whether it's analyzing the effects of vitamin D on bone health and cardiovascular disease, or studies on apheresis, medications, and natural remedies to treat atherosclerosis, or mapping squamous cell carcinoma progression in humans, or looking for the means to delay aging in mice, our areas of investigation are as diverse as the interests and capabilities of our department. In all of these activities, the research office provides valuable services - helping to build partnerships and providing specialized administrative management of numerous individually funded programs from many different sponsors.

All of these efforts further the Medical Center's fundamental mission "To enhance the quality of life and serve our community through the discovery of knowledge."  As we look to the future, we reaffirm our commitment to this mission, and to supporting the important and impactful investigative directions of the thriving research community within the department. And we eagerly look forward to building further on our record of success.
