Notch signaling is of fundamental importance in developmental processes. During kidney development, Notch signaling is absolutely essential for initiating differentiation in podocyte (specialized cells that support the glomerular capillaries and regulate permeability) progenitors. However suppression of Notch signaling is necessary for terminal differentiation. Ectopic expression of Notch, past terminal differentiation in podocytes in mice leads to glomerular diseases. Recently we have shown that Notch signaling is upregulated in the collapsing form of glomerulopathy. The main focus of my research is to determine the mechanisms of Notch upregulation in chronic kidney diseases with particular emphasis on collapsing forms of glomerulopathy.
