The Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Motility is home to excellent patient care and state-of-the-art facilities; clinical translational and molecular research; and training programs for clinicians and scientists.
With a longitudinal commitment to providing outstanding care for patients with complex gastrointestinal and liver diseases, this Division also is highly committed to clinical and outcomes research: basic and translational research: and education for fellows who plan to pursue an academic career.
Faculty and staff use the most advanced diagnostic and therapeutic tools available to ensure the best results for each patient. The Division also has dedicated staff that includes technologists, nurses, nutritionists and others meeting patient's needs with the quality of care and compassion expected from a leader in the field. One of the fastest-growing programs nationally, the Liver Transplant Program delivers excellent patient and grafts outcomes.
Research maintains a tradition of excellence at the forefront of discovery. Clinical studies focus on innovation: treatments for gastrointestinal disorders; testing and developing technology; such as biomarkers for gastrointestinal diseases.
Housed in a brand new 15,000-sq ft. endoscopy facility, staff perform both routine and advanced procedures; such as ablation of Barrett's esophagus; endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR); endoscopic ultrasound with fine needle aspiration, Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangio Pancreatography (ERCP); helicobacter pylori breath test; paracentesis; percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG tube placement); sham meal test after fundoplication surgery; and various types of stents.
A first-class motility center also offers advanced procedures including: manometry, anal-rectal manometry, high-resolution esophageal manometry; helicobacter pylori and hydrogen breath tests; lactose and fructose intolerance test; and pH-impedance testing.
Current research projects include investigating InterStim sacral nerve stimulation therapy for bowel control; peripheral sympathetic nerve stimulation for weight reduction; SmartPill colonic transit time validation; and TZP-102 to treat symptomatic gastroparesis related to diabetes mellitus.
At the Hepatology Research and Liver center, a nationally recognized team is involved in a series of clinical, basic and translational research focused on pharmacology/toxicology of liver and related diseases well as cancer. With extensive NIH funding, the Liver center is an especially exciting area for research development in the field of Gastroenterology/Hepatology
The Molecular Medicine Laboratory is the center for basic and translational molecular projects, a place where cancer research and therapies are the primary focus. Research subject's areas include gene therapy, drug development, cell signaling and cancer stem cells biology and targeting.
