Educational

  • Categorical residents receive a resident educational fund each year
  • Access to digital MKSAP question bank
  • Dykes Library access to electronic journals without subscription

Preliminary year and categorical residents in good standing with the program have access to educational funds as follows:

PGY1 Preliminary Residents - Up to $1000 to be utilized as follows:

  • Study materials for Step 3 or COMLEX 3.
  • Test registration fee for Step 3 or COMLEX 3.
  • Travel (air, lodging, meeting registration, local transportation) to a regional or national meeting in order to disseminate scholarship if attending as the presenting author.
  • Costs associated with poster production and/or submission fees associated with dissemination of scholarship.
  • Other educational books and/or resource with approval of the Program Director.
  • Small medical equipment (up to $200) - such as additional white coats, on call jacket, stethoscope, ophthalmoscope or otoscope.

PGY1 Categorical Residents - Up to $1000 to be utilized as follows:

  • Costs associated with poster production and/or submission fees associated with dissemination of scholarship.
  • Other educational books and/or resource with approval of the Program Director.
  • Small medical equipment (up to $200) - such as additional white coats, on call jacket, stethoscope, ophthalmoscope or otoscope.
  • Costs associated with renewal of BLS and/or ACLS.

PGY3 Residents - Up to $1250 to be utilized as follows:

  • Travel (air, lodging, meeting registration, local transportation) to a regional or national meeting in order to present scholarship if attending as the presenting author.
  • Costs associated with poster production and/or submission fees associated with dissemination of scholarship.
  • Other educational books and/or resource with approval of the Program Director.
  • Small medical equipment (up to $200) - such as additional white coats, on call jacket, stethoscope, ophthalmoscope or otoscope.
  • Costs associated with renewal of BLS and/or ACLS.
  • Registration for the ABIM certifying examination.

Additionally, PGY3 residents may access up to an additional $1500 in order to purchase board prep material or attend a board prep course.  These additional monies may not be used for any other expenses.

  • Medical Knowledge Self Assessment Program (MKSAP) Print Version and Digital version purchased for all categorical residents during their intern year

  • Free access to Uptodate

Insurance

At work

  • 24-hour secured parking garage paid for by the department
  • Two sets of scrubs and white coats provided
  • UPTODATE access throughout the hospital
  • Alphanumeric pagers
  • Meal allocations at KU: All residents will receive $15.00 per week
  • Meal allocations at VA: 24-hour access to food if on call (snacks, frozen meals, juices, etc)
  • 24-hour access to resident lounge with large screen TV, computers, DVD player and snacks

Professional

  • Membership dues to the ACP (American College of Physicians) paid annually
  • One week for locum tenens or moonlighting with Program Director approval per year

Off the clock

  • Housestaff Appreciation Fund: various activities like happy hours, Worlds of Fun, Royals games, basketball watch parties, haunted houses paid for by the department
  • Student pricing for KU basketball and football tickets (also able to buy football tickets for spouse)
