Welcome to the Internal Medicine Sub-Internship experience at the University of Kansas School of Medicine. This is an exciting time in your medical career, transitioning to becoming more independent in your patient care and preparing for the challenges of intern year. KU is truly a great place to choose your sub-internship as you will be able to lay the foundation for your future practice and make relationships that will last beyond your training.

There are several aspects about the practice of Internal Medicine which I enjoy and find intellectually stimulating. I like the continuous diagnostic and therapeutic challenges that are encountered in patient care. While several different specialties have this, the part that makes Internal Medicine stand out is the patient relationships that have to be built. Internal Medicine allows me to implement the vast knowledge acquired during medical school, residency and my subsequent practice with many diverse patients. An internist must be able to care for patients when they are at their most vulnerable, like when they are hospitalized, and intervene when health is better to improved overall outcomes and prevent disease. I am sure that most of you have similar feelings at the core of your future practice plans.

Regarding the sub-internship experience, students rotate on one of the Hospitalist Inpatient Services.  This allows the student to have one on one exposure to the Attending and it gives the student valued autonomy.  You will get exposure to several highly varied medical illnesses in a diverse population within our tertiary medical center. This rotation will provide an opportunity to function at the level of an intern with close one-on-one attending supervision and interaction. You will be involved in all aspects of your hospitalized patients' care: from initial presentation and work-up to discharge and follow-up planning.

I look forward to having you rotate in our sub-internship rotation and helping facilitate this next step in your journey to becoming a physician. Please do not have any reservations about contacting me if you have questions.

Thank you!
