Faculty and Staff

Director and Co-Directors

OpoleI had the privileged or learning the art of medicine from a masterful group of clinicians at the School of Medicine, University of Nairobi, Kenya. I learned the value of a focused and well thought-out differential diagnosis derived from a careful history and physical examination as a cornerstone of the clinical method. This art, combined with a compassionate and patient-centered bedside manner are, I believe, a foundation for sound medical practice.

Upon completion of my internship, I earned a PhD degree in the neurological sciences at the University of California, Irvine, and subsequently completed my Internal Medicine residency at the Kansas University Medical Center. I received my certification from the American Board of Internal Medicine in 2005, and was awarded Fellowship of the American College of Physicians in 2010.

As an Associate Professor of Internal Medicine, my clinical responsibilities as an academic hospitalist includes the training and supervision of residents and medical students in hospital clinical departments. In addition to my current role as the Internal Medicine Clerkship Director, I also serve as an Assistant Dean for Student Affairs and Academic Society Director for the Wahl Society, and a Medical Director for the KU Hospital through the Enterprise Informatics Physicians Advisory Committee (EiPAC).

I oversee The day to day running of the Internal medicine clerkship in addition to working with the faculty-student mentoring program through the academic societies and recruitment and development of volunteer faculty mentors. I also assist the Dean's office in professionalism, student portfolio and other programs.

NaylorI  received my Bachelor of Science from Kansas State University and am a graduated from the University of Kansas medical school.  I then went on to complete my residency in General Internal Medicine here at University of Kansas.

I spent a year as Chief Resident following completion of residency. My educational focus is on Medical Student Education, teaching the Cardiac and Pulmonary exam, and improving faculty-student feedback. My clinical focus is in providing high quality, safe inpatient care and improving the transition of care from inpatient to outpatient settings.

I volunteer my time with the Philmont Scout Camp in New Mexico, Riverview Health Services and occasionally at the JayDoc Free Health clinic. During free time you can find me with my wife and kids or riding my bicycle.

BeckerI am a lifelong Jayhawk. After graduating from Tonganoxie High School, I have been at the University of Kansas completing my undergraduate and medical educations as well as Internal Medicine residency training. In 2008 I joined the faculty as a Hospitalist and since 2010 I have been an assistant Internal Medicine clerkship director on the Kansas City campus.

The part of my job I most enjoy are the interactions with third year medical students. Their journey from seasoned learner at the beginning of the third year to budding clinician by the end is exciting to be part of. The students' enthusiasm for patient care, excitement with diagnosing and treating problems and insight into the complexities of their chosen profession are all admirable. I truly feel I learn more from the students than I teach them.

Besides my love for all things crimson and blue, I am a proud husband to Amy and daddy to Eli, Audrey and June. We enjoy going to sporting events in Lawrence and Kansas City as well as hanging out and building train tracks and playing with action figures and baby-dolls while at home.
