Neurofeedback treatment is preceded by an objective assessment of brain activity. Before a client has any brainwave training, a Quantitative Electroencephalography (qEEG) is done. The procedure processes the recorded EEG activity from a multi-electrode recording using a computer.
For the mapping, the patient sits in a comfortable chair while the technician cleans the earlobes and 19 spots on the scalp to ensure conductivity. The technician then clips tiny wires to the ears and pastes sensors to the scalp. The neuromapping computer program is run twice, first with eyes open, then with eyes closed, and takes 1 1/2 to 2 hours.
The digital data is statistically analyzed, comparing the values with normative database reference values. The processed EEG is converted into color maps of brain functioning called "Brain maps".
The EEG and the derived qEEG information can be interpreted and used by experts as a clinical tool to evaluate brain function, and to track the changes in brain function due to various interventions such as neurofeedback or medication.

What can I expect?
During neurofeedback, generally one to two sensors are first placed on the scalp and a set of ear clips are attached. They are connected to sensitive electronics and computer software that detect, amplify, and record specific brain activity. The software processes the signal and provides the proper feedback in visual and audio form.

Biofeedback uses technology to quantify physiological parameters such as heart rate, blood pressure, skin temperature and muscle tension. Patients consciously change their physiciologic state until the sensors indicate that the parameters have improved to a more acceptable range.
