Dissertation

Doctoral students are required to prepare and submit a dissertation that demonstrates independent investigation and scholarship, meeting the format requirements of the Graduate School and the School of Medicine. The dissertation must be presented and orally defended before the student's Dissertation Committee. Other faculty and students may also be present at the final defense. A minimum of two semesters must elapse between the successful defense of the dissertation proposal and the final defense of the completed dissertation.

Doctoral Committee

At the beginning of their concentration coursework, students should form a doctoral committee with a chair whose expertise is in the concentration area—advisors should be selected from HPM regular or courtesy graduate faculty.

Qualifying Examinations

After completion of all core and concentration coursework, students will take three examinations:  general concentration area exam, methods and statistics exam and specialized concentration area exam.  Passage of these exams will be followed by an Oral Comprehensive exam.
