MHSA Program Admissions Criteria, Process and Timeline

Admissions Criteria

Applications for admission to the MHSA program at the University of Kansas will be accepted from individuals with a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university in this country or a recognized university abroad and a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) for all coursework. A prerequisite course in undergraduate or graduate level statistics must also be completed prior to beginning the MHSA program.

Admissions Process

Step 1: On-line Application and Fee

• We are currently accepting applications for Fall 2013. The application deadline is March 1, 2013.
• Applications received in the months preceding March will be held for review until March 1st..
• Applications received and completed after that date will be considered on a space available basis only. Students are admitted in the fall semester only.
• The MHSA application process is predominantly on-line. Please go to https://www.applyweb.com/apply/kumc/index.html to access the on-line application.
• The application fee of $60 is paid when you click SUMBIT from the online application. Applicants can pay by Visa, MasterCard, Discover, American Express or by Electronic Check. U.S. banks only. Application fees are non-refundable. Electronic checks will be held for approximately six business days while the check clears.

Step 2: Additional Materials

• Transcripts. Arrange to have one official copy of each transcript from every college and university that you have attended sent directly to:

  • To be admitted as a regular graduate student, applicants must have not less than a 3.0 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale. Students are sometimes admitted on a probationary or provisional basis when their grade point average is less than 3.0.
  • For applicants still in school, a transcript showing the first three years of undergraduate work is acceptable. Before matriculation, entering students must have on file a final degree-granting transcript for each previous degree received.
• Resume. Applicants must upload a resume indicating education and work background, honors, memberships in professional, school, service organizations and any other personal information relevant to applying to a graduate program.
• Personal statement. Applicants must type in or upload a personal statement. This is a brief essay outlining the applicant’s reasons for wanting to pursue graduate education in health administration, career objectives, and any other information that would help the Admission Committee get to know the applicant. This is an important picture of the applicant and his or her ability to write clearly and descriptively.
• Letters of recommendation. Applicants must provide the names and e-mail addresses of three (3) references who are qualified to comment on their potential success both in a graduate program and as a health care executive. Please notify your references that they will receive an e-mail form "KU Medical Center requesting them to complete an on-line reference form. They may also upload a letter of reference in addition to completing the form.
  • Current students or recent graduates must submit at least one recommendation from a college instructor.
  • Employed applicants may ask work associates to supply references. In the latter case, at least one recommendation should be from a supervisor.
• International Applicants. Students submitting international applications have additional requirements, as follows:
  • Applicants whose native language is not English or who graduated from a foreign institution are required to submit official TOEFL scores less than two years old. Use institution code 6895 to have an official copy of your scores mailed to KUMC. The complete minimum English proficiency requirements for KUMC students can be found on the International Programs website.
  • All international students are now required to submit an evaluation of their academic credentials, as performed by one the many companies selling this service, such as World Education Service (WES) or Educational Credential Evaluators (ECE).
  • Please be advised that there are currently no graduate assistantships available in our department and international students are not eligible for federal student loans or scholarships. International students must be financially prepared to handle the full cost of living here and attending school.

Step 3: Interview

• All applicants with completed applications will be invited for an interview.

BACKGROUND CHECKS

The University of Kansas Medical Center now requires a criminal background check prior to admitting students to graduate programs ( (http://www.kumc.edu/student-services.html). Prior to final acceptance and initial enrollment in classes, applicants will be directed to have a background check completed by Validity Screening Solutions. The applicant must pay a one-time fee for the background check directly to Validity Screening Solutions. The MHSA program will review the information obtained through the background check and make a final decision on the applicant’s eligibility for the program. The MHSA program will then notify the applicant regarding final acceptance or denial of admission.
