David J. Cook, PhD, serves as the vice chancellor for the KU Edwards Campus in Overland Park, KS.,assuming this role in April 2013. Under Dr. Cook's leadership, the Edwards Campus continues its 22-year history of offering high-quality academic programs, research and public service of the University of Kansas to Greater Kansas City. Dr. Cook is also a Professor with faculty positions in Communication Studies on the Lawrence Campus and in Health Policy and Management in the KU School of Medicine in Kansas City.
Prior to his appointment at the Edwards Campus, Cook was the associate vice chancellor for community engagement at the University of Kansas Medical Center. In this role, he led a statewide infrastructure dedicated to working with communities, business partners, and regional leaders to advance the health of Kansas and beyond. Dr. Cook also served as the associate director of the Institute for Community and Public Health (ICPH), an entity dedicated to developing a new School of Public Health at the University of Kansas.
Dr. Cook's research interests focus on health communication, the health of underserved populations, health technology applications, workforce development and emergency preparedness. He has been funded by 28 different federal, state and private grants, acquiring more than $11 million in extramural funding as a principal or co-principal investigator. He has published 68 articles, book chapters and abstracts, including a co-edited case study book, and presented 77 scholarly presentations and posters at academic conferences. He has taught or co-taught 30 different courses, educating more than 1,000 students.
Cook was an American Council on Education Fellow working with the provost at the University of North Carolina Chapel-Hill. Dr. Cook is a graduate of Leadership Kansas and serves on several community boards including the Overland Park Chamber of Commerce, United Community Services of Johnson County, KidsTLC and the Rotary Club of Overland Park.
Dr. Cook holds a master's and doctorate in organizational communication from The University of Kansas and a Bachelor's of Arts from Iowa State University.
