KUMC Archives at Alumni Reunion Weekend

Visitors to the Clendening Library during the Alumni Reunion Weekend October 4-6
were treated with an up-close viewing of some of the Medical Center's oldest historical
documents housed in the KUMC Archives. Archivist Alex Welborn curated an exhibit of
items as part of the department's History Tour Trio, which also featured displays from
the Clendening History of Medicine Library and the Clendening Museum. The exhibit
presented a brief history of the first fifty years of the Medical Center through early
founding documents and personal collections donated by alums of the Schools of
Medicine and Nursing.

Highlights from the KUMC Archives included original correspondence of Dr. Simeon
Bishop Bell, whose donation of land and money helped establish the medical school
in Rosedale, Kansas; the original "articles of incorporation" of the School of Medicine
drafted by the Kansas Board of Regents in 1905; Dr. Philip Hostetter's (M'42) personal
collection of student and faculty photographs he took while a student in the School of
Medicine; and origin
al correspondencwritten by C. Sarah Leach (N'37) to her family
while serving with KUMC's 77th Evacuation Hospital in North Africa and Europe during
World War II.
