It's hard to believe that the holiday season will soon begin, but for many of us, cooler temperatures signal family gatherings, presents, and delicious food. However, this time of year is often the hardest for those who don't have the ability to provide adequate clothing, food, or even shelter for themselves or their families.
We are once again collecting donations to help those in need throughout the holiday season. As a family medicine clinic in an urban area, we're uniquely placed to help a large and diverse group of patients, many of whom are among the poorest in Kansas City. In 2011, we collected money, clothes, presents, and food for several area families, and in the 2012 holiday season we hope to do even more.
This year we're asking not only our faculty and staff for donations, but also our patients who can afford to give. When you visit our clinic, you likely meet some of the very people that you can help. Every little bit helps! Warm winter clothes, non-perishable food items, and monetary donations are always needed, and we will have a list of specific items needed at a later date. Below is a list of general food items that are being gathered:
-Instant potatoes, macaroni and cheese, stuffing
-Gravy mix packets
-Canned corn, beans, yams, sweet potatoes, green beans, pie filling
-Non-perishable pie crusts
You may bring any of these items to our clinic at 3901 Rainbow Blvd. We will be collecting any cold weather essentials, particularly outerwear: coats, gloves, scarves, hats. Used items are great! These items will be dispersed to those patients who arrive at our clinic without adequate cold weather clothing, and we will continue after the holiday season ends.
Thank you very much for your generosity! Together we can give to those in our community who need it the most.
