Appointments, Promotion and Tenure Overview

Are you considering going up for promotion and/or tenure? Here are a few things to review before you decide to move forward with this important decision.

  • If you are on the tenure track and you started in 2009 (or received an extension in 2007 or 2008), you are required to apply this year. You should have already been notified by FAFD or by your department Chair.
  • If you are not sure of the requirements for promotion to the next level on your track, a complete explanation can be found in the Guidelines for Promotion and Tenure. A more succinct summary can be found here: Abridged Guidelines for Promotion and/or Tenure.
  • If you review these requirements, decide that you are ready and can successfully document your achievements, you will need to read the pertinent sections of the Guidelines for Promotion and Tenure or the Manual for Volunteer Faculty. We have reformatted the Guidelines to make your search for relevant information a little easier. The Manual for Volunteer Faculty will be re-formatted soon.
  • Discuss your intention to apply with your Department Chair.
  • Fill out a Registration Form by May 1, 2014.

Once Faculty Affairs has received your registration form, we will review it and send you an email with the next steps.


2014-15 Timeline and Deadlines

March 3 to May 1, 2014:  Registration for applicants intending to apply for promotion and/or tenure in the Fall of 2014. The effective date of promotion and/or tenure will be July 1, 2015 for those recommended.

May 1, 2014: Deadline for submitting a Registration Form.

May 14, 2014: Departmental APT Chairs, Department Chairs, and Assistants information session.

June 4, 2014 (tentative): Open informational meeting on the promotion and tenure process from 3pm to 5pm.

June 19, 2014 (tentative): Open informational meeting on the promotion and tenure process from 5pm to 7pm. NOTE: If you are unable to attend any of these sessions, they will be recorded and available for review via a link on SharePoint.

August 1, 2014:  Deadline for Departmental APT Committee to review applicants. The Departmental APT Committee letters must be sent to the  Department Chair in plenty of time to write his/her letter of recommendation for each applicant. NOTE: The letters from the Department APT Committee and the Department Chair must be received on or before September 2, 2014.

September 2, 2014:  Application packets are due! Access will be removed from SharePoint at 5pm. Start early!

September to December 2014: Campus APT Committees review 2014-2015 applications.

January 2015: Joint School of Medicine APT Committee (combination of Wichita and Kansas City Committees) meets to finalize recommendations to the Executive Dean.

February 2015: Executive Dean sends recommendations to Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. Applicants that were denied promotion are notified and have two weeks to appeal decision based on process only. Vice Chancellor sends recommendations to Executive Vice Chancellor who then send them on to the Chancellor.

March/April 2015: Chancellor approves or denies recommendations and communicates to EVC for official notification to faculty members.

2014-15  Registration Form

School of Medicine faculty members planning to apply for promotion effective July 1, 2015, can access the Registration Form between March 1 and May 1, 2014.

Registration is now closed. An email with next steps will be sent by May 5, 2014. While we set up the SharePoint site to accept applications, please visit the Instructions page to get started on your application packet.
