The University of Kansas School of Medicine Faculty Development Program, organized out of the Faculty Affairs and Development office, is an established leader in faculty development for medical educators. Since 2006, when our Educators' Breakfast series began, over 600 faculty and fellows from The University of Kansas School of Medicine as well as School of Nursing and School of Health Professionals have participated in our programs. The professional development of participants is supported through the use of adult learning methods and collaborative learning. Courses, programs and continuing education credits are provided for the members of the School of Medicine faculty at no charge. Registration is required and acceptance into the course is a requirement for participation and continuing education credit.

Nineteen Session - Year-long course
2-hour class sessions will be held the first and third Thursdays (7-9 a.m.) from August 2017 through May 2018.
The Teaching for Excellence Faculty Development Course (formerly Doctors as Educators Phase II) is a 19-session, year-long course with a focus on advancing teaching skills knowledge and actively putting into practice the skills necessary for faculty to continue to enhance their teaching in medical education.
All current University of Kansas faculty (clinical and basic science) are invited to attend this course. The course will focus on innovative teaching methods, leveraging small group interactions, peer-to-peer teaching, giving feedback, and round-table discussions. Review of videotaped faculty learner teaching and live feedback opportunities will be an ongoing, active part of this course.

Enrollees will be required to complete an online application. Enrollment will be limited to maximize the interactive learning environment. Approximately 1 hour of pre-session reading/preparation will be expected prior to each class.

Bio for Erica Howe, M.D., Co-Director and Instructor
Dr. Howe is a board-certified internist who completed medical school at the University of Utah and residency and chief residency at Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana. She began her practice at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. While there, she was given the opportunity to develop curricula for the School of Medicine and the Division of Hospitalist Medicine and her passion for curriculum development and improving the teaching skills of clinicians was born.
She currently practices as an academic hospitalist at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas. In addition to her current full-time clinical work, she previously directed the Doctors as Educators Phase I Faculty Development Series at KU which focused on improving the teaching skills of faculty at KUMC with active learning principles that cover a range of topics including preventing and treating the difficult learner, motivating learners, teaching clinical reasoning, and conflict management and negotiation, among others. Dr. Howe and Dr. Barth have worked together to create and co-direct the Teaching for Excellence (formerly the Doctors as Educators Phase II) Faculty Development Course since 2014.
Dr. Howe's pursuits to improve medical education also translate to her work as the Chair of the Core Competence Committee for the Internal Medicine Residency Program at the University of Kansas. Here, in addition to her Chair duties, she serves as the Director of the "Resident as Teacher" Series, a teaching skills course for Internal Medicine residents. Her endeavors in teaching and academic medicine have been recognized with numerous awards and honors including receipt of the Kathleen McCluskey-Fawcett Woman Mentoring Women Award, the Women in Medicine and Science (WIMS) Scholarship, the Chancellor's Distinguished Teaching Award, and finalist for the student-elected Rainbow Award for "teaching the art of medicine by example".
Bio for Brad Barth, MD, Co-Director and Instructor
Dr. Brad Barth graduated from the University of Kansas School of Medicine where he was elected into Alpha Omega Alpha national medical honor society. He then completed an Internal Medicine Internship at Naval Medical Center, San Diego where he served as Senior Intern and was selected for Naval Flight Surgery training. After training in Pensacola, he served as a flight surgeon for Helicopter Combat Support Squadron FOUR, based in Sigonella, Italy. While there he was named the Atlantic Fleet Flight Surgeon of the Year, and was an instructor for ACLS, PALS, PHTLS, CPR, ABLS, Aviation Physiology, and Human Factors in Aviation. After leaving the Navy, Dr. Barth completed an Emergency Medicine residency at UCSF-Fresno. While there he received the award for Resident Teacher of the year as well as the award for the best research project at the annual Housestaff Research Forum.
Following residency, Dr. Barth returned to Kansas City and became a partner and member manager of the St. Luke's Hospital Emergency Medicine group. In addition, he was part-time faculty at Truman Medical Center in the Department of Emergency Medicine. In 2012, Dr. Barth left St. Luke's to join the faculty of the fledgling emergency medicine residency at KUMC. Since arriving at KUMC he has completed the American College of Emergency Physicians Teaching Fellowship, a 90-hour, year-long course of educational theory, faculty development and teaching techniques. He also serves on the national Faculty Development committee for the Society of Academic Emergency Medicine (where he is developing programs on coaching and mentorship) and the national Academic Affairs committee for the American College of Emergency Medicine (where he has developed a critical care curriculum and policy guidelines for undergraduate education in emergency medicine). Since joining the faculty at KUMC in 2012, Dr. Barth has played an active role in the education of EM residents teaching neurological and hematological emergencies using a variety of techniques including Team-Based Learning, Audience Response Systems, Bedside, and Procedural teaching. He was involved in the Doctors as Educators Faculty Development Course from 2013-2016 where he taught the session on "Giving Feedback." Since 2014, he and Dr. Howe have created and co-directed the Teaching for Excellence Faculty Development Course (formerly Doctors as Educators, Phase II) with much success.
