The residency program understands the importance of research and elective time for the pursuit of interests in both the academic and clinical arenas.  The program reserves one elective month during years 2 and 3 for residents to create the educational experience which is best for them.  The Department of Emergency Medicine offers many exciting elective opportunities; some in the Emergency Department itself, others in the Kansas City area, and electives in other states.

THE UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS HOSPITAL
Our Hospital is ranked #1 in the Kansas City Metro area by U.S. News and World Report and attracts the most challenging patients to our Level 1 Trauma Center, Heart Center, Primary Stroke Center, Cancer Center and Burn Center. The ED combines innovative architecture with leading-edge technology. The facility features a dual-patient trauma bay, four ambulance bays and decontamination areas for staff and patients. Several highlights of didactic training include high fidelity medical simulation, cadaver lab, mock oral board training, journal club and disaster training.

CHILDREN’S MERCY HOSPITAL
Children's Mercy Hospital, located in Kansas City, Mo., is one of the nation's top pediatric medical centers. The 319-bed hospital provides care for children from birth to age of 18, is ranked by U.S. News & World Report as one of America's Best Children's. The Division of Emergency and Urgent Care provides the highest level of care to sick and injured children and adolescents of the Kansas City region with two Pediatric Emergency Departments.

LAWRENCE MEMORIAL HOSPITAL
LMH is dedicated to providing personal and high-quality health and wellness services for the people of Lawrence and the extended community. Founded in 1921, LMH is a 173-bed hospital located in Lawrence, Kansas. In 2008 the newly remodeled Simons Center for Emergency Medicine opened its doors. The new area was designed with the patient in mind and its success is reflected in high patient satisfaction scores. The center is staffed by physicians, nurses, emergency medical technicians (EMT) and social workers/case managers who are specially trained in emergency medicine.
