Diabetes Survival Skills Class

Diabetes group class

What's this all about?

The Cray Diabetes Self-Management Center and The University of Kansas Hospital have teamed up to offer free classes to patients who do not have insurance coverage for diabetes education. Although most insurance companies pay for diabetes education, we know that education is so important that we want to provide a resource for patients whose coverage is not so inclusive.

Recommended for patients who:

  • Do not have insurance coverage for diabetes education
  • Need immediate assistance with diabetes management and cannot wait for a class opening

Diabetes Survival Skills Class is:

  • Free of charge: you will not pay a co-pay and we do not bill your insurance
  • Walk-in Service: you do not need to schedule a class in advance and you do not need a referral from your doctor
  • Group Class: for you and others wanting more education about diabetes
  • About the Basics: we provide this class especially for patients who need basic survival skills for diabetes -- for example, you need to learn how to use a glucometer or inject insulin. We encourage you to enroll in our Diabetes Education Program for a much more comprehensive education experience.
  • Education Only: we do not provide medical care during this appointment; if you need medical care (such as help with adjusting your diabetes medications) you must make an appointment with one of our providers

Class offerings:

  • Every Monday morning,10 a.m-noon
  • Every Wednesday afternoon, 3-5 p.m.
  • NO classes on holidays (actual or observed)

Check out our calendar to find specific days and times of classes. You are free to walk in to any class and no advance sign-up is needed.

Bring a Friend: Appointments are very comprehensive and the amount of information you receive can seem overwhelming. Bring one friend or family member with you to help listen and take notes at no extra cost to you! The appointment will be focused on the patient's needs; if your friend or family member has specific questions regarding his/her diabetic needs, we request that he/she make a separate appointment.

Insurance: We do not bill insurance or charge any fees for this class. If you want to know more about other classes your insurance might cover, visit our Frequently Asked Questions page. We would also be happy to walk you through the process if you call 913-588-6022, option 3.
