Uganda Medical Mission Trip

In September 2018, Dr. Michael McCartney traveled to Gulu, Uganda, to lead an anesthesia care team, consisting of three CRNAs and a certified anesthesiologist assistant, in successfully performing 95 surgeries in five days. The cases included plastic surgery/burn, ENT, urology and general surgery; there were no serious complications and no cases of post-operative nausea or vomiting. These patients ranged in age from 17 months to 80+ years. As in other underdeveloped countries, in this region, much of the cooking is done over an open fire, thus making burn injuries a very common problem, especially among children. Most of the local people speak the Acoli language, and only a few speak English.
